Does choosing TMS mean stopping medication?

No. TMS is often used alongside medication when antidepressants alone have not provided enough relief. A psychiatrist should review your current treatment before deciding whether to add TMS or change your plan. The American Psychiatric Association explains TMS and its role alongside medication.

“Drug-free” describes how TMS delivers treatment; it does not mean every person receiving TMS should be medication-free. Do not stop or adjust a prescription on the basis of a comparison page. Bring that question to your prescriber.

Which is better for you?

A useful comparison starts with your own experience. Was medication ineffective, partly helpful, or difficult to tolerate? What symptoms remain? What would a course of in-person visits require of you?

Bring a treatment list and ask your psychiatrist to explain the reasoning behind the proposed next step, including how improvement will be measured. If several treatments have fallen short, explore an evaluation for treatment-resistant depression.
