What Does TMS Therapy Feel Like?
A fair question, and a common worry. The short version: you stay awake, there is no anesthesia, and most people describe a tapping sensation rather than pain.
During a session
You sit in a comfortable chair, awake. A device rests against your head and delivers rhythmic magnetic pulses, which feel like a tapping or knocking on the scalp, along with a clicking sound. Many people read, listen to music, or simply rest. A session usually takes about 20 to 40 minutes.
Does it hurt?
Most people would say no, though it feels unusual at first. Some notice mild scalp discomfort or a headache in the early sessions, which tends to ease as you get used to the sensation. If anything feels off, the technician can make small adjustments.
After a session
Because there is no sedation, you can drive yourself home and carry on with your day. There is no recovery time to plan around, which is part of why TMS fits real workweeks. You can read more about how a course of TMS works.
What it feels like: common questions
Does TMS hurt?
Most people describe a tapping or knocking sensation on the scalp, not pain. Some feel mild discomfort or a headache, especially in the first few sessions, which usually eases as you get used to it.
Will I be awake during TMS?
Yes. You are fully awake the entire time. There is no anesthesia and no sedation. Many people read, listen to music, or simply rest.
Can I drive after a session?
Yes. Because there is no sedation, most people drive themselves home and return to their normal day right after.
What does the tapping feel like?
It is a rhythmic tapping against the scalp where the device sits, along with a clicking sound. It feels unusual at first and becomes familiar quickly.
Are there side effects?
The most common are temporary scalp discomfort and headache. We review the full list of risks, including rare ones, before you begin.
What if it feels uncomfortable?
Tell the technician. Small adjustments to position or intensity often help, and comfort tends to improve over the first week.
